Back To Basics

A year and a half ago, someone took me aside and told me that my life had veered way off course.  It was tough to hear but absolutely necessary.  With this “special person” by my side, I’ve been spending these past 18 months getting back to the basics of life in just about every area there is. It’s become vital that I start over.

My faith is supposed to be a big part of my life…it’s supposed to DEFINE my life and I’m embarrassed to say that over my past 10 years of working in ministry, I let God become my JOB instead of my GOD.  So one of the ways I’m getting back to basics is to read through the Bible again from Genesis to Concordance (that’s a joke) using the study guide “66 Love Letters” by Larry Crabb.

I didn’t expect much, to be honest, when I started. I’ve heard and read the story of Creation more times than I can count. Yeah, God created the Earth and everything in it.  NEXT!

But wait a minute.

Let’s make a list:

  • Day
  • Night
  • Sky
  • Land
  • Seas
  • Seed bearing plants
  • Sun
  • Moon
  • Stars
  • Birds
  • Fish
  • Wild animals
  • And finally…man

Now I want to ask you to do what I did.  Look over the above list and think about how much water covers our planet.  How much land there is on Earth (mountains, deserts, plains).  How many stars there are.  How many birds there are.  How many creatures live in the oceans, seas, rivers, lakes, and ponds.  How many animals there are.

I tried looking up a few of these things online to see if I could get some sort of number and wasn’t able to.

Now ask yourself this…why would God do that?

If God exists…and I believe He does…why would He go through all that trouble?

My life had gotten so far off track that I didn’t know.  Thankfully, Dr. Crabb spelled it out for me and the answer was so simple and yet so profound that it brought a few tears to my eyes.

God did it for love.

There’s really nothing else I can add to that.  It’s humbling.  It’s a basic truth.  God did it because He loves us.  He loves me.

He loves you.

  1. Such an awesome thought, Vikki. This is something I try to remind myself all the time, God isn’t just my job, but He is God to be worshipped and praised by me! Thank you for sharing this.
