Unlocked by Karen Kingsbury (Review and Giveaway!)

My name is Vikki and I’m a Christian fiction snob.

I generally avoided Christian fiction because I thought it was all contemporary romance, historical fiction romance or just pure unadulterated cheese.

I was wrong.

Unlocked by Karen Kingsbury had been setting in my “to read” pile for several weeks.  I literally judged the book by its cover and decided ahead of time that this book would cheesy romance, but Kingsbury really knows how to tell a story.

Holden Harris is a handsome 18-year-old high school student with autism and he’s the target of bullies.  Holden is a caring, loving, talented young man, but autism keeps him locked away from the rest of the world.  His diagnosis has taken its toll on his parent’s marriage. His mother works hard as a clerk at Wal-Mart and is Holden’s advocate at school.  His father can’t handle not being able to win the battle for his son and takes off for Alaska to work as a fisherman.  Outside of the occasional phone call, a visit three times a year and faithfully sending his paychecks to his wife, he has no contact with his family.

Ella Reynolds is a typical pretty, popular girl who’s troubled by the way her boyfriend, Jake, and his crew treat anyone who’s different, especially Holden.  Ella isn’t aware that when she and Holden were 3 years old, their families were quite close until the diagnosis of autism.  Gradually, she becomes Holden’s friend and advocate.

Kingsbury is a talented writer.  I think she’s managed to write a faith-based book that contains an excellent story, which quite frankly, are hard to find.

  1. Was this your first Karen Kingsbury book? I have read her Redemption series and Firstborn series which all about the Baxter family’s problems, triumphs, etc. I never thought I would enjoy Christian fiction. In the past I have read a few which really left something to be desired and kind of turned me off. I have truly enjoyed Karen Kingsbury. I really want to read her Sunrise series, which continues the Baxter family saga, and her Women of faith series. When I was reading the two series, I was sending Terry to the library for me twice a week to get the next books. Karen puts so much in her books but is so easy to read. You already have so much to read you probably won’t get around to more of her books. They are addicting.
